Warning to Glenn Beck: Don't Drink Diet Coke

The popular Fox News host announced today he's taking a medical leave, because “There is something wrong with my voice, and we’re not sure what it is,”

That's not all. "Yes," he told an audience of 6,000 in Salt Lake City two weeks ago, "I (also) have a problem with my eyes,”

Like millions of Americans, he consumes a lot of Diet Coke and chocolate, reports the New York Times in a feature on Mr. Beck last month.

Whether or not you share Mr. Beck's political views, here's what makes this news for all of us:

Guess what's in Diet Coke?

The sugar substitute, aspartame. And today, because of Beck's stature across the USA, news services are reporting how the "sugar substitute" aspartame is likely making Beck blind.
"Coca-Cola began putting the “sugar substitute” aspartame in Diet Coke in 1982. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death."

"In 1999, the Independent...discovered that the maker of aspartame, Monsanto, uses genetically engineered bacteria to produce the “sweetener” at its U.S. production plants." See here.
Here's what Glenn Back needs to know:
"Aspartame is linked to blindness. It is made up of 50% phenylalanine, 40% aspartic acid and 10% methyl alcohol. Methyl alcohol inevitably affects vision. Back when the government imposed prohibition on the country, thousands of people went blind due to the use of wood alcohol/methanol in spirits."
Is it worth going blind over Diet Coke?

P.S. "In addition to blindness, a report produced by the Department of Health and Human Services lists over 90 symptoms related to aspartame, including: migraine headaches, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain. The following chronic illnesses are triggered or worsened by ingesting aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes." If you eat corn or barley...

You might get (or have already gotten) fat. And unhealthier.

Because, corn and barley are used to prematurely fatten "cows, sheep, pigs and poultry".

We just got it from the Financial Times (PDF here in case) today...

"The US Department of Agriculture, in a closely watched report, predicted that the country’s stocks of corn would halve to their lowest levels in 14 years.

"It warned of a “much tighter supply picture” for corn and barley, the two main feed-stocks used to fatten cows, sheep, pigs and poultry." Emphasis added. See here (or PDF above).

I know corn's cheap. Is it worth getting fat over?

P.S. Did you know McDonald's chicken nuggets are mostly corn? It's cheap and the chickens were stuffed with it so the nuggets look fat. Now they'll pass the fatafat on to you. :( Want to know what else is in those 'chicken nuggets'? Go to the bottom of the article, here.

Why exercise won't make you thin...

Just in. Of course it's not news to readers here...

"Got a few pounds to lose? Cancel the gym membership. An increasing body of research reveals that exercise does next to nothing for you when it comes to losing weight. A result for couch potatoes, yes, but also one that could have serious implications for the government's long-term health strategy"

"My mum used to complain that she couldn't lose weight. A size 18 and a couple of stone heavier than ideal, she tried in vain for years to shed the extra. Every week she headed to the gym, where she pounded the treadmill like a paratrooper, often three times a week. Most days she took the dog for a brisk, hour-long walk. She didn't eat unhealthily – the rest of the family ate exactly the same meals, and did a fraction of the exercise she did. She ought to have been the slimmest of the bunch: that she remained overweight was a frustration to her, and a mystery to all of us.

"From StairMasters to kettlebells, Rosemary Conley to Natalie Cassidy, we understand and expect that getting in shape is going to require serious effort on our part – and the reverse is true, too, that we expect exercise to pay back the hours of boring, sweaty graft with a leaner, lighter body. Since the days of the Green Goddess, we've known that the healthiest way to lose weight is through exercise. It's science, isn't it?

"Well, science has some bad news for you. More and more research in both the UK and the US is emerging to show that exercise has a negligible impact on weight loss. That tri-weekly commitment to aerobics class? Almost worthless, as far as fitting into your bikini is concerned. The Mayo Clinic, a not-for-profit medical research establishment in the US, reports that, in general, studies "have demonstrated no or modest weight loss with exercise alone" and that "an exercise regimen… is unlikely to result in short-term weight loss beyond what is achieved with dietary change." More here.

Add to that Dr. Heidi's findings with her clients: to lose weight, a body's fat burning mechanism must be working, which means it must be healthy and functioning. That's accomplished first with return to eating (and drinking) real foods, non-synthetic stuff, non-toxic stuff. 100% grass fed, for example. Hundreds of people now live on the ER Food Guide listings, because it includes the good stuff if every category. And they're available in most parts of the country. See more here.

Swimming in chlorinated pools can lead to cancer

Just in...

Swimming in chlorinated pools can cause an increased risk of cancer in bathers, Spanish researchers said on Monday.

"The evidence of genotoxic effects were observed in 49 healthy adults after swimming for 40 minutes in a chlorinated indoor pool," CREAL said in a statement on Monday.
Do they want to stop people from swimming? Well, no, they say.
"The positive health impacts of swimming can be increased by reducing the levels of these (toxic) chemicals," he said.
And just who is going to reduce the levels of these toxic chemicals from the swimming pools across America? They haven't done it for the daily food and drink for the American public...
Each day, several times a day, we consume toxic chemicals in everything we eat, from fruits and veggies (pesticides), grains and beans. All industrial meats and eggs have big concentration of these pesticides. To top things off, the big industrial feed lot owners feed the poor animals genetically modified corn and soy (!!!!) and give them impure chlorine laced tap water. All because it's cheaper and gives them bigger profits.
Profits to the few, yes. But at the expense of every single American adult and child who trustingly eats what they're offered in the giant supermarket aisles to restaurants and fast food.

Suddenly one day out of the blue, we get that wake-up call. And our life drastically changes. Along with those of everyone around us as we cope...

Americans don't know how to die

Atul Gawande's articles on healthcare for the New Yorker are all top-shelf, but his most recent piece on modern medicine's difficulty in dealing with patients who are likely to die is a doozy and a must-read...

I read this magnificent piece at the bank while opening an account (thank heavens with someone else who was talking to the banker at the time), and just started crying. Shook my soul.

"Sara Thomas Monopoli was pregnant with her first child when her doctors learned that she was going to die. It started with a cough and a pain in her back... Continued here - PDF

Thanks for the reminder, Jason.

Something inherently good

Something inherently good starts this Saturday, April 24...

Here's how I know when I'm offering something inherently good for my market.

First, I market something I do myself each day, to folks "like me" - people who are members of my tribe. My niche, as it relates to this value.
Take health and fitness.
I have been interested in fitness, energy and staying a size 7-8 - since I was 20. I have spared no expense nor effort to keep fit and healthy since then - over 35 years.

Not a day goes by that I don't do something for my fitness and energy. For example, I run up a nearby mountain everyday (4 miles), stand up when I work at my computer - yes for hours and hours for many years - and I consume 99% real non-processed, non toxic foods.
So that's why I know marketing Dr. Heidi's ER real food eating program is inherently good for my market - people who care about their health, energy and size, like I have for all these years. The ER program is the same one I've been doing for the last 20 years.

And because I live ER eating, I love selling it to anyone else who shares those values.
And I know there is no evil or harm that can come to anyone when they eat non-processed, non-toxic real foods from local farmers. The evil and harm has come from processed and toxin-loaded food-like substances that people trusted were nutritious and were not.
Why am I telling you this? One big reason:

THIS SAT a new ER Fat Burn cycle starts with Dr. Heidi. A five week program designed to rejuvenate your body with real foods, oils and proteins that can restore your body as well as it has mine and hundreds of others.

What's encouraging about the ER Fat Burn? Consider this:
Local farms are springing up in every part of the USA. That means it's possible to get 100% grass-fed meats and pastured chickens and eggs. And where there is no local farmer's market, you'll discover how to order ER foods online from a variety of places.
Do you want to join us and learn how to eat healthy again? And not be hungry all the time anymore? (Regular foods are so processed that they have almost NO nutrition left. That's why you're hungry an hour after you eat. And feel the urge to eat again.)
Learning to eat just the right meats, poultry and fish is a magnificent start to restoring your bod to the glory of old. You'll get a wonderful ER foods list on day one. People love that list and take it with them to the bathroom, even. Just to hold it.
Anyway, want to meet Dr. Heidi, my oldest friend?

Check out her 12 minute video where she describes what you get in her ER Fat Burn program.

ER Fat Burn cycle starts this SAT, April 24. In five weeks, your body can experience the feeling of nutrition like it hasn't had for years. We'll help you do what WE do each day.

You coming? If video is not your thing, read the ER Fat Burn program description here.

Death To The Diet

Diets. Perhaps the biggest failure America has experienced in 200 years. 70% of the people walking the streets are overweight or obese. The percent increases every month.

Not one diet works for more than a tiny number of people. That's why nearly everybody you know is overweight. They do NOT all live on junk food, candy and ice cream. MANY eat "right" and they still gain.

I have concluded - after 20 years - that diets can not work for more than that tiny number of people, no matter what it is.

Here's one reason. (43-second audio) And no, you will not like it.

On this WED evening, 6PM, Dr. Heidi will give you the other two reasons. Neither has anything to do with the type of diet. Call limited to the first 100 people.

You coming?
