Mountain Dew can dissolve a mouse, says Pepsi

Just in from Grist...

An Illinois man is suing Pepsi Co. because, he says, he found a mouse in his can of Mountain Dew. But Pepsi says the guy is pulling a Strange Brew, and here's how they know: If there really were a mouse in a Mountain Dew can, it would have dissolved into "a jelly-like substance" before the guy could find it. Seriously, this is their defense.
The company argues it has scientific evidence that the mouse was not in the can when the case was sealed in August 2008 and that a veterinary pathologist examined the mouse, finding that it could not have been in the can that long because its body would have disintegrated due to the acid in the soda.
Pepsi argues that for the mouse to have been in the Mountain Dew that long, the body would have transformed into a "'jelly-like' substance."
More here.  Geez.  You drink Mountain Dew?

PS Is Pepsi's product is essentially a can of bright green/yellow battery acid?

Surely most readers here have heard similar stories about the corrosive properties of Coca Cola. I have not done in-depth research, but I believe the culprit here is carbonic acid, which is formed when carbon dioxide is dissolved in water. So the same corrosive property is shared by Mountain Dew, ginger ale, and sparkling water.

This is MUCH less corrosive than battery acid, which dissolves things much faster and more completely. I think carbonic acid is also weaker than vinegar (ascetic acid) and vitamin C (ascorbic acid).

On the other hand, I am confident that there are specific health benefits of that latter two, but I have not heard anyone claim health benefits for carbonic acid in my lifetime.

Once one starts raising his/her nutrition awareness, it becomes hard to imagine that anyone still drinks soda. The damage that is done to the bones ought to be enough for rational people to reject drinking something so harmful as soda. Of course someone is drinking it. Pepsi had a 1.14 billion dollar profit in just one quarter in 2011. That's profit people, after the bills are paid!

NPR had a really funny way of telling this story on their weekly news roundup show called "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me." I was in STITCHES! The replay is available on their website.

So glad I don't "Do the Dew" or any other soft drinks...liquid poison!
