After a cleanse, one thing people come away with is a sense of lightness - not feeling as enslaved to those old cravings for foods (and even people) that they know aren't good for them. Weird, but it has happened to me each time also. Some cravings are almost like distant memories. Best: no feelings of remorse or deprivation.

"Will I be able to work?"

So asked a gent considering ER Detox here. He's in the construction business in (already) cold Canada, and does "fairly strenuous construction" each day. (And yes, he's coming.)

This was Dr. Heidi's response...

Will I be able to work?
"I will be giving a number of food options to cover participants' different levels of activity. In addition to eating more of the main cleansing foods, there are certain kinds of proteins and fats (which you need for high activity levels) that you could add to your plan while cleansing. I'm also planning to address options for colder weather.

"Many people cannot get away from work long enough to do a cleanse in the traditional way. Although I recommend getting away from work and social obligations to optimize your experience, it's better to cleanse while working than not to do it at all. The increasing levels of environmental and food toxicity today are too scary not to do it. Also, a more gradual cleanse is sometimes more pleasant because there may be fewer, if any, unpleasant detox reactions.

"Auditors are welcome to participate in the online discussion board, which I monitor closely. You could post questions on the board and get an answer from me, along with replies from other participants. Both actives and auditors are often the source of interesting and creative ideas to implement the strategies I present." - Dr. Heidi

I dreamed I got a new me.

On Nov 2, I'm starting my favorite annual regeneration experience.
Lulu is 45 this year, and she's coming too. She's longing to be young again. Maybe start some things over. Keep the experience she has now, but with the looks and energy she had at 25.
Each year for 12 years, I've been doing this to get that new me feeling again. All radiant and re-energized, with a carefree attitude about life and where it might take me. I have never once been disappointed.
I must admit though, that I always go in with a bit of trepidation. I think about that last cup of coffee, that last crunchy thing, and I secretly make note of where to get those things in case...Even stash some.
And then the program starts. And suddenly all the cravings evaporate. I don't know where they go. It is so weird. But for 12 years that's what happened...And when it's done I feel like I've been reborn

So I'm doing it again November 2.

Is health a right?

In a developed society, should we each expect to have health? Like water and electricity? I.e. it's something "others" provide?
Or is health a personal choice? Like being an entrepreneur? A person chooses how they eat, drink and live. And they're responsible for the results.

"No" means you believe health is not a right - that each individual is responsible for their health (I do not refer to health insurance.)

"Yes" means you think health is a right - something that others, like the government, should be responsible for giving you.
(Again, you are not voting on health insurance, but the health of each individual, including weight, fatigue, etc.)

Survey: Half of US doctors use placebo treatments

Interesting dilemma.

Just in from London...
"About half of American doctors in a new survey say they regularly give patients placebo treatments - usually drugs or vitamins that won't really help their condition. And many of these doctors are not honest with their patients about what they are doing, the survey found.

"That contradicts advice from the American Medical Association, which recommends doctors use treatments with the full knowledge of their patients.

"It's a disturbing finding," said Franklin G. Miller, director of the research ethics program at the U.S. National Institutes Health and one of the study authors. "There is an element of deception here which is contrary to the principle of informed consent."

"Placebos as defined in the survey went beyond the typical sugar pill commonly used in medical studies. A placebo was any treatment that wouldn't necessarily help the patient.

"Scientists have long known of the "placebo effect," in which patients given a fake or ineffective treatment often improve anyway, simply because they expected to get better..." Continued here. PDF in case

And therein lies the dilemma: to tell or not to tell?
Experts don't know if the placebo effect would be undermined if patients were explicitly told they were getting a dummy pill.

2 Things to know about your daily vitamin before you buy

Your daily vitamin might not be the insurance you think it is.

Are you aware of big vitamin scare going around the US and UK? The staid Reader's Digest even had a cover story, "The Vitamin Hoax: 10 not to take" Nov, 2007).
Worst case: some vitamins are harmful. Best case: they do, well, nothing. So says the Reader's Digest.
Before you pop that next daily multi, check the bottle for two things:
1. Toxic ingredients.
Artificial colors: FD&C Blue #2 Lake, FD&C Red 40, etc.
Preservatives: sorbates (eg, Polysorbate 80), benzoates (eg, sodium benzoate), nitrites (eg, sodium nitrite), sulphites (eg, sulphur dioxide)

2. Are they synthetic?
Look at the names of the vitamins and minerals in the “Ingredients” listing on the label of the bottle. (You may need a magnifying glass.) A vitamin or mineral is synthetic if only its chemical and/or popular name appears, with no plant source.

E.g. from the label of a popular synthetic multivitamin seen on TV

Ingredients: Calcium Carbonate, Calcium Phosphate, Magnesium Oxide, Potassium Chloride, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), DL-tocopheryl acetate (Vitamin E), more here...ALL SYNTHETIC vitamins.

Your vitamins are not synthetic if they are listed with their whole food source.
For example, “Vitamin C (from camucamu fruit)” indicates that you’re getting the Vitamin C, along with the other nutrients it lives with in the whole fruit. Not just the isolated vitamin C made in a lab.

One thing to know about steak before you eat it

Before you eat the next steak or burger, find out what they've fed the animal. You might be stuffing yourself with tumor-causing excess Omega 6.

Here's the story, mostly borrowed from a friendly rancher named Bill Kurtis.

For thousands of years, cattle grazed on grass.

But about 60 years ago, some government people got an idea.
"During World War II, a surplus of cheap corn provided by the government was fed by ranchers to their cattle with startling results. The meat was tasty because of excess fat, and the cattle gained weight quickly, which meant more money faster. The entire industry eventually became an assembly line from pasture to giant feedlots for grain-feeding, then on to slaughter-house, supermarket, and steakhouse.

"It took fifty years before nutritionists realized that the highly marketed 'corn-fed marbling' was the wrong fat, Omega-6.

"It’s no use trying to blame anyone. Who knew? Fatty acids were only discovered by molecular biologists in the ‘70’s. And their presence in beef cattle, even later." More here...

What's with Omega 6?
"Human beings evolved with Omega-6 and Omega-3 in a 1:1 ratio, eating a diet of nuts, plants and wild game. The modern ratio can often be 10:1, even 20:1 Omega-6 to Omega-3.

"That's a bad balance, considering that Omega-6 can cause tumors, chronic inflammation, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and auto-immunity when not held in check by the Omega-3 fatty acid."
Corn-fed meat, full of Omega 6 because of the cheap corn feed, is about all you can get in supermarkets and restaurant. Very risky for your health.

And that's why Bill Kurtis is a "grass-fed" cattle raiser today:
"The out-of-balance ratio—Omega 6 to Omega 3—changes back to normal when the cattle eat grass." More here.
Next time you buy meat, or order it in a restaurant, ask for "100% grass-fed." Then you won't be stuffing yourself with tumor-causing excess Omega 6.

I've done Detox/Cleanse with Dr. Heidi for 14 years. Once or twice a year. The main fear I had was: Will I be hungry? What about my coffee?

What I experienced each year was: I was NEVER hungry and I never missed my vices. After the fast, I didn't give them up entirely. But I reduced them, with no stress. It just kind of happened.

The other thing I experienced each time each year: I felt like I was 16 inside again. Just an unbelievable feeling that lasted for several months after each cleanse.

"ER kefir perked up my Bell's Palsy eye"

Rhonda got Bell's Palsy 5 times. People normally get it once in their lifetime. In the fashion business, a paralyzed eye is not a good thing.

When she got it again recently, Rhonda did something weird. She put some ER home-made kefir on her sagging eye lid. (Home-made kefir - something many ER Fat Burn participants get.)

Anyway, the next morning...

"I didn't need to lose weight. I audited the program because I wanted to make sure my ten-year-old son was eating right." -Robin.
"I was eating right, mostly plants, and no red meat, not too much fat and rarely ate sweets. (ok I thought I was eating right!)

"I did drink a lot of Alka Seltzer because my stomach was always upset. I was always bloated and couldn't get rid of the 10-year-old baby belly fat. I didn't have energy to play with my son or stay awake with my husband after our son went to sleep.

"He tells all his friends what we eat now and why. He's on his own mission to help get his friends off the chicken nuggets, fast food and even low-fat milk. He will only eat eggs and meat from pastured sources. He helped me make butter a while back and loves the whole milk (I admit I haven't found raw milk yet - but I will).

"It's priceless to know I'm teaching my son how food affects health. The timing was so perfect to involve him in the things I was learning from Dr. Heidi. The entire ER group has helped shape the future of my son, so Thank you all!

"Also, my family loves grass-fed beef, that's huge for my son and me, we've never been red meat eaters.

"I haven't used Alka Seltzer in 10 weeks, no more upset stomach, bloating and the baby belly fat is gone.

"I enjoy playing with my son (and husband) again. I have energy again.

"Most nights I sleep through the night. If I do wake it's not all the tossing and turning like before.

A 30-year diabetic does ER Fat Burn...

This is a note from Al to Carol re her story here in the private Google Fat Burn group...
"Very inspiring Carol. Makes me want to add my own successes. In brief I followed the program quite closely except for the kefir.

"As a 30 year Type II diabetic (using insulin) my main goals were to lose weight and keep my blood sugars under 100. (Non-diabetics usually are between (70-110).

"These were very important to me and motivated me to start and commit to the program. When I had some immediate weight loss my commitment and motivation heightened. My results:
  • Have lost 8 lbs
  • Have an average blood sugar for the last 60 measurements of 86. In thirty years that low of an average has never happened...I have been on a low carb plan for many years but not a food plan like ER.
  • I used to have low energy problems but I'd been accepting that in exchange for moderate blood sugars. Once I added good fats and proteins on the ER Fat Burn plan I now have the energy, weight loss and normalized blood sugars.

The 3AM call I got the other night.

This just in from Carol McC, an auditor for Dr. Heidi's Sep Fat Burn program. She got the ER Real Food list, and listened to the five group calls. She reports...
"I have had great success, lost 12 lbs in 5 weeks and 9 1/2 inches. I did take notes, but seldom made time to refer back to them after listening to all the calls...I probably could have done better.

"But I want to tell you about my 3 am call to work to help with a special project.

"First thing I did was hot water with lemon, get dressed, take POPS, cook my eggs and packed an ER Goody Bag.

"It took an hour for me to reach the office at 4:30 am. I was alert and ready, not so for those 30 years younger than me, as they all straggled in later than I.

"By 7:00 pm, (13 hours later) when it was obvious that it was going to be an all night project and them some.

"I went to Whole Foods for provisions, (Liverwurst, Turkey, Olives and some Raw Cow's Milk Cheese). I took a Purple POPS every 4 hours or so.

"When the attorney that I work closely with asked me what I was taking, I showed him the box. He asked for some too, I said go ahead. There was lots of take out junk food, Pizza, Fried Chicken, Biscuits & Sausage, Bagels, etc.

"I ate no junk, he ate very little - one piece of Pizza. I was fine, I drank lots of water, some home-made ER Kefir and ran out of my staple of homemade iced Green Tea.

"I am proud to say that I was able to get up early today for my foraging at the two Farmer's Markets that I go to. I found some Grass Fed Lamb chops today, my Raw Goat Cheese, 7 lbs. of Chicken Backs for soup and my staple of Pastured Eggs. I will take a nap shortly and sleep very well tonight and maybe a little later than usual tomorrow.

5 things I learned from ER Fat Burn

It's nice to know when a way of eating works for you. But it's nicer still when that same strategy works for lots of others, too.

Dr. Heidi has just run two ER Fat Burn 5-week programs. I know everyone in it because all were customers and readers of my stuff (about 50 active participants and more auditors). Here's what I learned while taping the group calls and from the many emails I received.
1. The experienced dieters in the group report that losing weight by eating ER real food works better than calorie counting, starving or pills. WAY better. Plus they were never hungry.

2. Eating real foods has a big side benefit: it regenerates bodies and heals ailments that most people thought they'd have to just "live with" for the rest of their lives. From acid reflux to scaly skin.

3. Eating specific real foods helps people reduce cravings for sweets and bread. Suddenly they don't feel deprived and sad about not having it.

4. Most of the participants thought they were eating pretty well. But they were stunned at how rejuvenated they felt after a week or two of eating ER real food. And love to go foraging for it.

5. Half of the group of July ER Fat Burn actives signed up for the Sep Fat Burn, and nearly half are already signed up for the October Detox/Cleanse program. In a time of "recession" someone laying out $500-600 for such a program several times over 4 months is a statement of its effectiveness all by itself. Think? NO ONE is rich here.

Exercise: an impractical way to lose weight?

Yes, exercise is actually an impractical way to lose weight.

So says nutrition professor, Dr. Heidi. Hear the reason why in this 4 minute audio segment on exercise, during a private ER Fat Burn session. See also the New York Times report, Does Exercise Really Keep Us Healthy? here.

According to Dr. Heidi:
#1 to lose fat and weight: Eat right. A real food plan (with no pills required) does way more for fat burn and weight loss, including losing inches in the waist and gut, than exercise. Especially in the beginning. See below...
Yes, exercise is necessary for a healthy body. But for weight and fat loss, it's secondary to a real food plan. Dr. Heidi of ER Fat Burn explains...
You have to exercise so much (90 minutes a day now, they say) that right after, a body gets hungry. And its owner eats. After a good workout, has anyone else here (righteously) stopped off for the Starbucks latte + sweet thing?
People in the 5-week ER Fat Burn program have lost weight and inches, without changing their exercise habits. Oh. They don't exercise much because they work too much, not cuz they're lazy.

If it's weight you're trying to lose, says Dr. Heidi, right food is first. Then, if you want, exercise.
The body NEEDS exercise, yes. But for weight loss, it's an inefficient strategy, especially in the beginning. Exercise researcher Dr. Blair reports that "it’s much easier to eat 1,000 calories than to burn off 1,000 calories with exercise." More here.

What food DOES make a person fat?
One journalist spent five years looking into this full time. He reviewed tens of thousands of pages of research findings, and interviewed numerous doctors and nutrition folks. Here's his second (of nine) conclusions about what DOES make a person fat.
"2. The problem is carbohydrates in the diet, their effect on insulin secretion, and thus the hormonal regulation of homeostasis - the entire harmonic ensemble of the human body.

What's a food that does NOT make a person obese?
One journalist spent five years looking into this full time. He reviewed tens of thousands of pages of research findings, and interviewed numerous doctors and nutrition folks. Here's his first (of seven) conclusions about what does NOT make a person fat.
"1. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease or any other chronic disease of civilization." Taubes
Dietary fats include coconut oil, the fat on a Porterhouse steak, butter and bacon. They do NOT make you fat or obese after all.
